In an unexpected twist of events, Judge Abrams has rescued herself from being judge on the FTX criminal case. As a result, a new judge will now be selected
She rescued herself from the case because of the law firm where her husband works, Davis Polk. A firm that had dealings with FTX back in 2021
In her words…
“It has come to the Court’s attention that the law firm of Davis Polk and Wardwell LLP, at which my husband is a partner, advised FTX in 20211, as well as represented parties that may be adverse to FTX and Defendant Bankman-Fried in other proceedings.
My husband has had no involvement in any of these representations. These matters are confidential and their substance is unknown to the Court.
Nevertheless, to avoid any possible conflict, or the appearance of one, the Court hereby rescues itself from this action.”
She was referring to herself as the Court here.
On December 27, 2022, the case was reassigned to judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over cases such as Poker Stars and the lawsuit against Donald Trump
